Abstract
A fracture of the talar neck is relatively rare. but it is generally regarded as a serious traumatic lesion of the ankle, because of the poor outcome after treatment. The talus has a unique biomechanical feature and vascular supply, so the
complications
with avascular necrosis and traumatic arthritis are frequent.
Authors analyzed 9 cases of fracture of the talar neck, treated al Maryknoll Hospital from 1987 to 1991. The follow up period was at least 12 months.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. Of nine cases, there were seven males and two females, and most of all were second and third decades.
2. Common causes were traffic accidents and falls, and common mechanism of the fracture was violent hyperdorsiflexion of the ankle.
3. According to the modified Hawkins' classification, type I was two cases, type II was six cases, type III was one case and type IV was no case.
4. The most common associated injuries were fractures of the ipsilateral ankle.
5. Two cases in type I and one case in type II were treated conservatively, and five cases in type II and one case in type III were treated operatively.
6. According to the Hawkins' criteria, one case in type I and five in type II were encountered excellent result, one in type I and one in type II were good, and one in type III was fair.
7. One case in type I developed skin necrosis, one in type II managed conservatively and one in type III treated operatively developed avascular necrosis, and one in type II managed conservatively developed traumatic arthritis.
